Supervision in Coaching: From Reflection to Reflexivity
Supervision is not about finding quick answers, but about creating a space in which the coach can look at their own practice with greater clarity.
What happened? Why did it happen? What does this say about me? Much of professional learning is built around these three questions.
Supervision supports this natural process of awareness by guiding the coach through three levels of reflection on practice: reflection, critical reflection, and reflexivity. In parallel, the same journey can be viewed through the lens of the three learning loops: doing, thinking, and being.
Coaching Supervision: The Return to Self
There are paths that change everything.
When wolves were reintroduced in 1995 in Yellowstone, no one imagined how profoundly the landscape would transform. They became a catalyst for life. Through their presence, they reactivated the entire system.
Supervision in coaching is much the same. It’s not an optional add-on to coach training. It’s a space where returning to oneself generates clarity, vitality, discernment. Where the presence of the supervisor acts like that of a pack leader - not through force, but through coherence. Not through authority, but through presence and clarity.
Coaching, Flow, and Fulfillment
When we talk about coaching, we inevitably come to speak about the state of flow as well.
Moreover, based on my experience, flow not only enhances the performance of both client and coach, but also brings fulfillment into their lives. Therefore, it is definitely worth exploring how we can cultivate this state, in coaching and beyond.
I strongly believe that we all desire to create fulfilling experiences, for ourselves and the people we serve, influence, lead or inspire. In my view, a coach can do this precisely by facilitating the flow.
